Nicole Chan of Nicole Chan Photography

When selecting a wedding photographer, Nicole suggests that couples consider key factors to ensure they choose the right one. Here are some questions to ask about their work approach:

1. What is their photography style? Choose a photographer whose style matches the aesthetic you envision for your wedding. Whether you prefer candid, documentary-style photos or more posed, traditional portraits, the photographer's previous work should reflect your desired approach. Ask the photographer to share galleries of a full wedding from beginning to end, perhaps from a venue with a vibe similar to yours.

2. What is their approach and pre-wedding planning? Some wedding photographers prefer a hands-on approach, helping with timeline creation, brainstorming locations for portraits, carving out time for sunset or twilight portraits, and even memorizing the names of the wedding party and immediate family members before the wedding day. Others take a much more backseat approach, letting the day unfold naturally without any pre-wedding planning.

3. How do they capture the special moments? If your wedding incorporates unique cultural traditions or if you're planning a multicultural event, ensure your photographer is experienced in handling such situations. This ensures they capture all significant moments with the sensitivity and attention they deserve.

4. Do they take evening photos? If your venue and timing allow, consider scheduling a session for nighttime photos. These photos can offer a romantic and different perspective compared to daytime shots.

5. Is there an option for albums and/or wall art? Consider how you intend to use your wedding photos post-event, such as in albums, wall art, or thank-you cards. Some photographers provide a full service, printing the albums and wall art, delivering them, and even installing and mounting the artwork in your home.

Stephanie Miaco of YES Inspired

Hiring a wedding planner is a wise decision! While some couples may initially hesitate at the idea of bringing in outside help, the benefits of hiring a professional means they bring in expertise, experience, and a vast network of industry connections, streamlining the planning process and alleviating much of the stress and overwhelm that often accompanies wedding preparations.

According to Stephanie, it's important to draft or think of questions that pertain to your planning before hiring anyone. Here are a couple of questions to bring up during the initial consultation when looking for a planner:

1. What are your experience credentials? It's important to check what kind of experience they have. You may have a religious ceremony or include certain traditions in your program, which particular planners might be experts at. Some planners are skilled in niches such as design, digital print or rentals. This can be cost-saving if you do more than one service with them, rather than hiring multiple vendors. However, this also depends on your personal taste! Ask what they’ve done recently, and what relevant certifications they can offer or can be useful.

2. How big is their on-site team? Each wedding is different; sometimes, fewer guests means more work requiring additional hands. Inquire about how they operate the day of the wedding and their planning process leading up to the event. At YES, our ‘day of’ and ‘month of’ packages begin about three, sometimes four months ahead (with the preliminary details) to ensure we hit all the marks. We also want to build the reception program with the couple so we're all on the same page and can tailor it, making sure that all the logistics are included. Backyard or outdoor weddings are almost double the work, as we don't always get the assistance we would from a venue; this would require a serving team, bartender, greeters, and additional help to set up and tear down.

3. Regarding creative input, how can we enhance our vision and bring fresh ideas in? This is really important as some planners are just there for the logistics and may not be involved in the creativity or have the creative eye you're looking for. Ask for previous work or sketches and discuss your style and what you're looking for. As designers, we have separate conversations about this, which can be lengthy.

4. What is something you do as a planner that other companies may not? This can be interesting, as mentioned. Every planner has their own niche, so it's clever to ask what they can offer to make your wedding different. Personally, if we're using the same ideas for multiple weddings, we change them up for each individual couple, so they're specifically just for them. We try to do something different every time!

5. What do you do to assist with budgeting and finances associated with wedding planning? I find that asking this question initially will mentally prepare your planner for the type of vendors they refer to, what areas require more cost, and what aspects aren't really needed. For example, I work closely with the couple to establish a realistic budget based on their priorities and preferences. I provide guidance on allocating funds to different aspects of the wedding, such as venue, catering, décor, and entertainment, to ensure their budget is well-balanced and reflects their vision.

Melissa Barban of Pure Lush Designs & Co

When selecting a florist for your wedding, Melissa emphasizes the importance of couples asking the right questions to ensure their style and expertise align with your vision. According to a professional florist, couples should ask their florist the following:

1. What is their design style? Understanding your florist’s design style is essential to ensuring it matches your wedding aesthetic. Are they more traditional or modern, or do they specialize in unique, artistic arrangements?

2. How many years of experience do they have with weddings? Experience matters. Ask how long they have been working specifically in the wedding industry. This can give you confidence in their ability to handle the unique challenges of wedding floral arrangements.

3. Do they have formal floral training, or are they self-taught? Knowing whether your florist has formal training or is self-taught can give insight into their background and expertise. Both paths can produce amazing florists, but it's good to know their foundation.

4. Do they have liability insurance? This is a critical question for your peace of mind. Liability insurance protects you and the florist in case of unforeseen accidents or issues.

5. How many people are on their team if the main florist has an emergency or gets sick? Weddings are high-stakes events, and it's important to know that your florist has a reliable team to step in if necessary. This ensures that your floral arrangements will be delivered as planned, no matter what.

In addition to these questions, it's also important to:

  • Ask to see specific portfolio work that is similar to their vision. Reviewing their previous work can give you a clear idea of their capabilities and style. Make sure they can produce designs that align with what you envision for your big day.

  • Ask specific questions about their recent projects. For instance, “When was the last time you installed an arch?” This will give you a sense of their current experience and proficiency with specific types of arrangements.

  • Determine whether they work more with artificial or fresh flowers. Depending on your preferences, knowing if your florist can provide the type of flowers you want is crucial. Fresh flowers have a different look and feel compared to artificial ones, and your choice may impact the overall aesthetic of your wedding.

Jessica La of Jessica La Music

Not everyone hires a DJ; many newlyweds opt for a live musician instead! According to Jessica, it’s really important to ensure the couple chooses a musician who fits the vibe of music they want performed for their special day.

As your potentials about the following:

1. What are their music styles? While there are many very talented musicians, most of us specialize in specific genres of music and would prefer to perform those kinds of music. I’m a classically trained multi-instrumentalist with experience performing in Latin bands, classical ensembles, R&B groups, and marching bands. So, that kind of experience helps me play a wide range of music.

2. Are they bringing their own instruments, or do any need to be provided? For someone like myself, if I’m performing in a venue with a piano, it’s important to know whether it is in good shape and recently tuned. I would gladly provide a digital piano and amplification if there's no piano in the venue!

3. Do they have a repertoire list? Couples are welcome to see what songs have been performed in the past, and it can really help guide their decision when choosing a musician to perform.

4. What else do you offer? Every musician is different regarding their offerings. Personally, in addition to performing solo piano, I also offer duos, trios, and working with a live painter!
