“My husband has a daughter from a previous relationship and when he and I met she was only five [years old]; we got engaged when she was eight [years old] and because my husband and I were planning a small destination wedding (that my step-daughter wouldn't be able to attend) we wanted to have a wedding that was just for the three of us, for us becoming a new family and for her to feel like an important part.

We live in Southern California and asked her where she'd like for us to do our family wedding—we suggested we could all three go to the local courthouse to make our marriage official, we could go to San Francisco (and make it into a family vacation) since the courthouse there is so beautiful—or we could go to Las Vegas and get married. She chose Las Vegas!

Once we started looking into chapels and officiants (and saw how expensive it'd be for Elvis to marry us), we had another idea: what if she married us? She loved the idea! We wrote out a small script for the wedding and went to Las Vegas and decided we'd have the ‘ceremony’ in front of the fountains at the Bellagio. Once we got there, it was so cold that we decided to go inside; it was Thanksgiving weekend, and the hotel was beautifully decorated for Christmas. We found a spot by some gorgeous (and huge!) trees, [and] as we got there, a lovely family noticed what we were doing and asked if they could take photos for us. We gave them our phones, and one woman took pictures while the other filmed the entire video.

The ceremony lasted about five minutes, during which we all got new ‘family wedding’ rings (that have each of our birthstones) and exchanged vows [with] each other.

It was so sweet and special, and three years later, we still celebrate our ‘family-versary’ every day after Thanksgiving.”

We didn’t want a traditional wedding, so we turned ours into a ‘storybook soirée.’

As a writer and an illustrator, my wife and I always connected over stories. From our first date debating Austen vs. Atwood to the dog-eared fantasy novels on our shared bookshelf, stories stitched our lives together. So, we made our wedding one. Literally.

Each guest received a custom-bound ‘chapter book’ when they arrived, part program and part short story. Every chapter represented a stage of our love, from “Once Upon a Swipe” (yes, we met online) to “The Great Garlic Bread Debate” (a very real argument). The ceremony took place in a forest clearing strung with fairy lights, with our best friend officiating from a giant storybook podium.

Instead of a first dance, we performed a spoken-word duet, recounting the highs and heartbreaks that led us to that moment. My voice cracked when I described seeing her walk down the aisle in a gown embroidered with literary quotes. She squeezed my hand in the exact rhythm I’d written into the final ‘chapter.’

At the end of the night, we signed our guest book (designed like a hardcover novel) with ink-dipped quills and sealed it with wax. Our guests laughed, cried, and quoted our story back to us as they hugged us goodbye. Marrying the love of my life was surreal. But marrying her our way—on the page and in the woods—felt like the perfect plot twist.

“We're Sammie and Micah, and we had an adventure elopement on an ocean cliff with just 20 guests.

We're both huge nature lovers, we grew up exploring the outdoors, and we fell in love going on road trips and other adventures while dating. Ever since I (Sammie) was a little girl, I dreamt of getting married barefoot on an ocean cliff. Even before I knew anything about weddings or elopements, I just felt like that would be so me! When we got engaged, we talked about it and quickly decided that a large traditional wedding just didn't feel right for us.

Because of all that, we decided to have an adventure elopement, and every part of it was amazing! The planning was much more fun than stressful since we were planning something that felt like us.

The entire day was so intimate and we got to spend so much time actually present with each other. We spent a few hours of the day exploring the coast, hiking around the bluffs, dancing in tree tunnels, and watching the sunset on the beach. We loved exploring nature and feeling unhurried and fully in the moment during our day.

We had our 20 closest friends and family present for multiple parts of the day, and since the guest count was so small, we got to really connect with everyone who was there with us.

We loved our adventure elopement so much that we actually decided to become adventure elopement photographers!”

No two weddings are the same, but the heart of every celebration remains the same—love, commitment, and the joy of starting a new chapter together. These real-life wedding stories remind us that while plans may change and surprises may arise, the most meaningful moments are the ones shared with the people we love.
