Budget-Friendly Destination Wedding Tips: How to Tie the Knot Without Breaking the Bank
Planning a destination wedding can feel like a dream come true—until you start crunching the numbers.
Fear not! With the right strategies, you can have the picturesque wedding you’ve always wanted without draining your savings. To help us gain a deeper understanding, we also spoke with Emily Coyne, a Certified Wedding & Event Planner and the founder of Emily Coyne Events.
Here's how to make your destination wedding as budget-friendly as it is beautiful.
Set up a Wedding Fund and Choose an Off-Season Date
“The best weddings, destination or not, are those that are deeply meaningful to the couple and fulfill their priorities for the day,” Emily told us. “Couples must design what makes sense for their lives. An increased budget simply means that more money can be spent on enhancing the guest experience or further bringing the couple's vision to life. It doesn't necessarily create a more meaningful wedding.”
Opting for an off-season date can dramatically cut costs. Many popular destinations have peak seasons when prices for venues, accommodations, and flights skyrocket. You can take advantage of lower rates by choosing to marry during the off-peak months. Additionally, an off-season wedding often means fewer tourists, giving you and your guests a more intimate and exclusive experience.
Simplify Your Venue Choice
Instead of booking a traditional wedding venue, consider locations that offer natural beauty and require minimal décor. Beaches, botanical gardens, and historic landmarks can serve as stunning backdrops, saving you a fortune on decorations. Many resorts also offer all-inclusive packages that bundle the ceremony, reception, and accommodations, providing significant savings and reducing the stress of coordinating multiple vendors.
“Couples think they should start planning a destination wedding by prioritizing the elements: food, music, decor, et cetera. However, doing this first is such a mistake. The single most important thing couples can do after determining their budget is deciding whether the guest count or the wedding vision is more important to them,” Emily noted.
Limit Your Guest List
A smaller guest list can make a big difference in your overall expenses. “Regardless of your total budget, the difference of 20 guests one way or the other means several hundred to several thousand dollars and can be the difference between having that band or having a DJ,” Emily shared. “The answer of priorities is unique to each couple, but we are seeing a trend of couples placing the overall experience and vision for a destination wedding ahead of inviting a large guest count. More couples are planning their dream destination wedding, even if that means only inviting 30 or 60 people, and they are incredibly happy with this decision.”
Thus, inviting only close family and friends can help to keep costs down. This not only reduces the amount you’ll spend on food and drinks, but also on transportation and lodging. With fewer guests, you can create a more personalized and meaningful experience, ensuring that you have time to celebrate with each person who attends.
Utilize Local Vendors
Hiring local vendors can save on travel and shipping costs. Research florists, photographers, and caterers based in your destination who can offer their services without the added expense of bringing someone in from home. Local vendors often have a better understanding of the area and can provide unique touches that reflect the local culture and landscape!
“Before spending anything, do a breakdown,” Emily advised, “or, better yet, have a professional event planner do one, [including] of how the full budget will be allocated. If you're doing this yourself, ensure you get real quotes and ask for pictures of the items you'll need down the road: flowers, invitations, lighting, shuttles, et cetera.”
DIY and Digital Invitations
Traditional printed invitations can be costly, especially when factoring in international postage. Opt for digital invitations, which are both eco-friendly and budget-friendly. There are many online tools available that allow you to create beautiful, customized invitations and track RSVPs efficiently. For those who prefer a tangible touch, consider DIY options using materials that reflect your destination’s vibe, adding a personal and creative flair.
Group Travel Discounts
Work with a travel agent to secure group discounts for flights and accommodations. When you book in bulk, airlines and hotels often provide lower rates. Inform your guests of these deals well in advance, encouraging them to book early and save money. This helps them with their travel expenses while ensuring that everyone stays close, enhancing the sense of togetherness throughout the celebration.
Embrace Minimalism
Minimalist weddings are trending for a reason—they’re chic, elegant, and cost-effective. Focus on the elements that matter most to you and your partner, whether it’s a breathtaking view, a meaningful ceremony, or a fantastic meal. By stripping away the non-essentials, you can allocate your budget toward the experiences and details that will create lasting memories. This can also help mitigate any changes in currency from your home country to the destination wedding’s country.
Emily reminded us that “education is key. Just as you would educate yourself before investing in the stock market, you want to educate yourself before investing in a destination wedding. A mistake we often see is couples who have committed a huge percentage of their budget to a venue without having done the research to understand other wedding costs. It's an investment.”
To keep costs under control without sacrificing quality, consider minimalist décor, simple yet stylish attire, and a straightforward menu.
